“Gipsy Queen” Gala Premiere

The award-winning movie Gipsy Queen starring Alina Șerban will be presented at a Gala event on February 20, at the National Theater I.L Caragiale of Bucharest, on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the Abolition of Roma Slavery in Romanian Principalities.

To honor this occasion, Roma Education Fund Romania (REF), together with European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) and Amphitheatrrom Cultural Association, are officially launching the joint project “Roma Voices.” The initiative is financially supported by the second Swiss Contribution to Romania through the Romanian Ministry of Labour, Family, Youth and Social Solidarity, acting as Programme Operator for the Social Inclusion Programme.

Gipsy Queen (2019) is a powerful and inspiring boxing story of a Roma single mother from Romania, directed by Hüseyin Tabak. The main character, Ali – played by Alina Șerban – uses everything to provide for her kids. The film was nominated for and won several awards in best director and best actress categories, including Best Leading Actress for Alina Șerban at the German Screen Actors Award (2020).

The highly anticipated feature will then be released in cinemas nationwide starting February 27. More than a cinematic event, the launch of Gipsy Queen stands at the heart of a national campaign advocating equal access to education and sport for all.
