ERIAC Supports National Film Tour Across Roma Communities in Romania

The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) is supporting a national tour of the documentary film CALIU: Nothing else, what else can I do?, directed by Simona Constantin. The initiative brings screenings directly into Roma communities across Romania, aiming to make cultural experiences more accessible and rooted in the places where these stories resonate most strongly.

The tour begins in Brăila County, with the first screenings taking place on 21 – 22 May in Făurei and Șuțești. Following the opening events, the film will continue its national journey with planned screenings in Satu Mare, Prahova, Vaslui, Iași, and Dâmbovița.

CALIU: Nothing else, what else can I do?

The film portraits the legendary violinist at the crossroads of his career. Unable to accept that his days of glory are long gone, the “king of the violin,” Gheorghe ‘Caliu’ Anghel, needs to reinvent himself. Oscillating between the challenges of the present and memories of his international career, for Caliu only the music has remained the same. With his comeback, Caliu fights to reclaim his place: on stage, in his taraf, and at home.

This initiative forms part of ERIAC’s broader strategy to strengthen pride in Romani identity through deeper community engagement, greater visibility of Roma artistic production, and the creation of meaningful opportunities for cultural exchange and encounter. By bringing the film directly to Roma communities, the tour provides an accessible space for audiences to engage with contemporary Romani culture and storytelling, while encouraging reflection and dialogue on questions of identity, creativity, and lived experience.
