ERIAC’s Film Tour Brings Cinema Home to Roma Communities

The national tour of the documentary Caliu: Nothing Else, What Else Can I Do? continues to reach Roma communities across Romania throughout the summer of 2026. The film, directed by Simona Constantin, portrays legendary violinist Gheorghe ‘Caliu’ Anghel navigating the need to reinvent himself as he reconciles his past international fame with the realities of his present life, where music remains his only constant.

Supported by the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC), this traveling programme aims to increase access to cultural experiences and root them in the communities where these stories resonate most strongly. Since launching in May 2026, the tour has already engaged several local Roma communities, including Făurei, Șușești, and Brăila (Brăila County); Carei (Satu Mare County); Mila 23 (Tulcea County); and Giurgiu (Giurgiu County).

Summer Screening Schedule (July – August 2026)

The programme, which includes film screenings and interactive youth workshops, will visit the following locations:

  • July 10: Starchiojd, Prahova

  • August 1–15: Valea Mare, Vaslui & 10 Prăjini, Iași

  • August 20: Saturn, Constanța

  • August 21: Neptun, Constanța

This initiative forms part of ERIAC’s broader strategy to strengthen pride in Romani identity through deeper community engagement, greater visibility of Roma artistic production, and the creation of meaningful opportunities for cultural exchange and encounter. By bringing the film directly to Roma communities, the tour provides an accessible space for audiences to engage with contemporary Romani culture and storytelling, while encouraging reflection and dialogue on questions of identity, creativity, and lived experience.

CALIU: Nothing else, what else can I do?

The film portraits the legendary violinist at the crossroads of his career. Unable to accept that his days of glory are long gone, the “king of the violin,” Gheorghe ‘Caliu’ Anghel, needs to reinvent himself. Oscillating between the challenges of the present and memories of his international career, for Caliu only the music has remained the same. With his comeback, Caliu fights to reclaim his place: on stage, in his taraf, and at home.
