According to the artist Robert Gabris, “Tajsa is the connection between yesterday and tomorrow, present energy between you and me, power, beauty, fragility.” With the 2021 Tajsa Roma Cultural Heritage Prize Exhibition, ERIAC is honouring and celebrating the creativity and spirit that represent the Tajsa Prize and even more wonderfully also its design by Gabris. The bridging of time and space, of resistance and future possibility are poetically encapsulated by the growing and blossoming of a floral emblem that became the meaningful icon of the Tajsa Prize. “We Roma carry this spirit with us and it is this which brings us together in celebratory joy of who we are. Together, we are Tajsa!”

Text: Nataliia Tomenko and Marc Hörler

BIOGRAPHY

Robert Gabris

Robert Gabris was born in Slovakia, lives and works as a freelance artist in Vienna. He graduated in the University for Performing Arts in Bratislava and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Gabris has often been able to collaborate in many international exhibitions with various Roma organisations such as Eriac in Berlin and New York, Agency for European Fundamental Rights (FRA) in Vienna, Akademie Graz in Strasbourg, Bucharest, Paris and Sarajevo, Open Society Foundation in Prague, and with the Visegrad Fund in Budapest.

Gabris deals with drawing and engraving, describing the content of his work as a socially critical, political and activist confrontation with identity issues and new perspectives of the Roma in the European context. Starting point of his work are new experimental forms of drawing as a resistance against exclusion, homophobia and racism.

Besides his work, Gabris teaches anatomical drawing in various institutes in Vienna. In his spare time he draws corpses in the Anatomical Institute in Vienna, but he is also interested to study bones, meet and flowers.

Pored svog rada, Gabris i predaje anatomski crtež u raznim bečkim institutima.
