Mashkari Amende Returns to Šuto Orizari on 27 September with Live Music

On 27 September, Mashkari Amende gathers the Šuto Orizari community on the Municipality Square for an evening of live music. Initially planned for 12 September, the performances were postponed after the devastating fire that broke out in the neighbourhood the day before, out of respect for the families affected and in solidarity with the whole community. Now, ERIAC and the Municipality of Šuto Orizari bring the festival’s music programme to the stage to celebrate 30 years of Šutka.

Since becoming a municipality in 1996, Šuto Orizari has given its largely Roma community an institutional framework to govern its own public life. Its story began earlier still, in the neighbourhood that grew up after the 1963 Skopje earthquake and became one of Europe’s most important centres of Roma theatre, music, poetry and media. Mashkari Amende celebrates this legacy and carries it to a new generation.

On 27 September, it’s the young musicians of Šutka who set the evening in motion. The musical programme opens with the Roma Rock School Band, a group of young Roma musicians from Šuto Orizari. Next, the acclaimed Roma Macedonian multi-instrumentalist Bajsa Arifovska takes the stage, accompanied by Friends: Damir Imeri on piano and keyboards, Ivan Bejkov on bass, Ratko Dautovski on percussion, Zlatko Madevski on accordion and Dushko Georgievski on vocals. Gipsy Groove from Kosovo keeps the momentum going with Romani music charged with Balkan ska and reggae, before DJ Bate carries the party late into the night.

The programme forms part of ERIAC’s ongoing work to strengthen Roma community pride and identity by creating spaces in which Roma communities can articulate, celebrate and share their culture on their own terms. It also contributes to the wider recognition of Roma histories, artistic practices and cultural production as an integral part of Europe’s cultural landscape.
