ERIAC Serbia Receives Remembering Hilda Dajč Award for Outstanding Contribution to Remembrance Culture

The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) is honored to announce that ERIAC Serbia received the 2026 “Remembering Hilda Dajč” Award for Outstanding Contribution to Remembrance Culture offered by Terraforming for the exhibition Combing Through Time: Disentangling the Hidden Histories of the Roma Genocide. The fifth annual Remembering Hilda Dajč Award ceremony was held on May 7, 2026 at the University of Belgrade’s “Svetozar Marković” University Library.

This recognition affirms the instrumental role Roma-led institutions and organizations, as well as Roma experts, artists, and researchers, have in shaping contemporary cultural and remembrance practices across Europe. Amid democratic backsliding, rising polarization, racism, and historical revisionism, remembrance culture acts as an important pillar supporting democratic values, social cohesion, and resilient societies.

The exhibition Combing Through Time: Disentangling the Hidden Histories of the Roma Genocide was on display at ERIAC Serbia between September 13, 2024 and March 31, 2026. The show centered on the often-overlooked narratives of the Roma genocide during World War II and honored the resilience of the Roma community in Serbia and the region. It served as an introduction to a training program focused on the role of media professionals in combating discrimination and antigypsyism that welcomed 30 participants from the Western Balkans and Türkiye.

ERIAC Serbia extends its appreciation to Danijel Vojak for his contribution as expert associate, as well as to all institutions and partners who opened their archives, shared their expertise, and contributed to the preparation of the exhibition curated by the ERIAC Serbia team.

The award was accepted on behalf of ERIAC Serbia by Žarko Savić of the Roma Entrepreneurship Development Initiative (REDI), an ERIAC partner organization and member of the Roma for Europe network. At the time, the ERIAC Serbia team was in Italy, engaged in project-related activities within the European initiative Rethinking European Memory: Art as a Tool for an Inclusive Culture of Remembrance (ReIMAGINE).
