The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) started the Romani Language Initiative in June 2020, in the frame of the International Cultural Outreach program of ERIAC, the “Roma Cultural History Initiative,” supported by the Federal Foreign Office, Germany.
This initiative contains efforts towards an “International Romani Language Reform” with the following long-term objectives: to build on the existing results developed by the Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe in 2008 as part of the Council of Europe’s comprehensive approach to Roma and Travellers issue; to continue the international work on the common Romani language with international experts with proven experience in the field; to develop teaching materials based on the Curriculum Framework for Romani; support the language re-learning needs of Roma individuals; to organize training for Romani language teachers.
This year, on November 6th, on the occasion of the World Day of Romani Language, ERIAC organizes the 4th edition of the International Conference “Safeguarding Our Romani Language” in partnership with the Council of Europe and the University of Bucharest – The Romani Language and Literature Study Program. The conference brings together the most relevant experts and practitioners of the Romani language, educators, academics, as well as different universities from Europe and other countries that engage with teaching Romani, linguistics research, and the development of teaching materials. Our goal is to provide a platform for cooperation and language harmonization at a global level, to design future strategies for preserving the language heritage, and to fulfill the general need in Europe for Romani language education.
Departing from the notion that Romani language heritage is at risk, the conference aims to establish cooperation for language harmonization at the national and international levels, to promote the recognition, preservation, development, cultural-political harmony, and synthesis for the future of the Romani language, developing symbolism for Roma identity and shaping a transgenerational understanding of Roma cultural history.
This year, ERIAC invites the European Commission to take an active role in becoming a future partner of the Language Initiative, but also different universities and Romani language experts to support the Romani language harmonization process, leading us to a common Romani language. A particular focus will be on highlighting existing global initiatives and teaching materials within the field.
The conference is scheduled to be held at Reinhardtstraße 41-43, 10117, Berlin, and it will be available both in-person (Reinhardtstraße 41-43, 10117 Berlin) and online (YouTube) to participants worldwide, ensuring maximum accessibility. The conference sessions will be conducted in both Romani and English, and we will provide Romani-English-Romani interpretation throughout the entire event.
