World Roma Day 2025
April 8 marks World Roma Day, an occasion to reflect upon Romani people’s legacy of self-determination and the continuation of the revolutionary act began in 1971 at the first World Roma Congress: claiming our right to define our own future.
Today, we honor the efforts of Romani individuals and organizations who advance the Roma cause on every front. From artists whose work challenges stereotypes and redefines cultural expression, to advocates and policymakers fighting for equity and inclusion, to scholars and educators safeguarding Roma history and knowledge—their contributions shape a more just future for the Roma.
Today, we reaffirm the significance of this occasion not only for Roma communities, but also for cultural institutions across Europe. This day is a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to preserve, support, and elevate Roma arts, heritage, memory, and knowledge production.
Supporting Roma-led initiatives ensures that Roma guide decisions affecting their communities. World Roma Day challenges us to move beyond symbolic gestures and invest in meaningful partnerships.
As we celebrate today, we also reflect on the path ahead. Let us draw inspiration from the strength and perseverance of Romani communities worldwide and the strides made in the past year. Let us recommit to creating spaces where Roma stories are heard, their art is celebrated, and their rights are upheld. Opre Roma!
