The Romani Studies Program at Central European University (CEU), the European Romani Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC), and the Intercultural Institute of Timișoara announce the online launch of the new thematic issue of Critical Romani Studies, dedicated to examining racism and structural antigypsyism within the field of Romani Studies. Bringing together scholars, editors, and contributors, the event offers an opportunity to engage with current debates on how knowledge about Romani people is produced, challenged, and transformed.

About the Thematic Issue

The issue, titled “Racism and Romani Studies,” investigates the historical and contemporary mechanisms through which antigypsyism has shaped academic inquiry, public discourse, and cultural narratives. It critically explores how Romani people have been marginalized in scholarship and policy, while highlighting the significant intellectual and cultural contributions of Romani communities across Europe.

 

This publication builds on discussions from the International Conference “Racism and Romani Studies” (September 14–15, 2023), organized by ERIAC in cooperation with the Intercultural Institute of Timișoara and West University of Timișoara. The thematic issue aims to advance a more equitable and reflexive academic field by challenging biased constructions of the “Gypsy” and promoting a dignified and accurate collective memory.
