International Conference: Visibilities of Memory Representation of Sinti and Roma in Holocaust Film | Heidelberg & Online

ERIAC is pleased to share the invitation to the International Conference “Visibilities of Memory”, organized by the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism (RCA), Heidelberg University.

The conference focuses on the representation of Sinti and Roma in Holocaust-related visual culture, addressing a long-overdue perspective in European memory studies. Historically, Europe’s largest minority has been excluded from cultural representation and participation. Visibilities of Memory examines how this exclusion is reflected in Holocaust film and image production — and explores emerging narratives that challenge these silences and offer new perspectives.

With over 40 speakers from European and U.S. institutions, the interdisciplinary and international program includes:

  • Academic presentations on film, memory, and representation

  • Dialogue sessions with filmmakers and artists

  • Networking opportunities for minority self-organisations, researchers, filmmakers, educators, and young scholars

The conference will take place 12–14 November 2025 at the International Science Forum Heidelberg (IWH), with both on-site and online participation possible.

Organized by the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism, the event is part of the “Cooperation Network Against Antigypsyism” under the federal program “Living Democracy!” of the German Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth (BMBFSFJ), and supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
