Film Screening & Discussion – Romani Women On and Behind The Camera

Film Screening & Discussion in Berlin

On Wednesday, 15 April 2026 at 20:00, a film screening at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA brings together a selection of short films by and featuring Romani women filmmakers from across Europe.

The programme presents works from Spain, Romania, and the United Kingdom, alongside a special new selection from Greece. Moving between fiction and documentary, the films reflect a range of approaches and perspectives, offering insights into identity, everyday life, and artistic expression.

The screening includes:

  • El Regalo (The Gift) by Lara Izagirre Garizurieta (Spain, 2025, 14 min, Spanish with English subtitles)
  • La revedere, castelule (Goodbye, castle) by Alina Șerban (Romania, 2024, 20 min, Romanian with English subtitles)
  • The Angry Bird by Lisa Smith and Jack Lilleywhite (UK, 2025, 10 min, English)
  • Featured Highlight (Greece, 2026, 14 min, Greek with English subtitles)

After the screening, an inspiring panel of filmmakers and activists will host a discussion about female Romani representation in film, storytelling, and cultural space.

Lisa Smith is a Welsh Romani filmmaker, producer, and curator whose work centers on advancing Romani stories in cinema. She has directed and produced celebrated short films like The Angry Bird, winner of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund. She also curated the AKE DIKHEA? International Festival of Romani Film and in 2023 founded Patrin Films and is a founding member of the Romani Filmmakers Network to amplify Romani voices in the industry.

Talina Connolly is a Sinti activist and member of the Netzwerk Sinti Roma Kirchen, working in Berlin with initiatives focused on dismantling discrimination and uplifting the interests and cultural presence of Sinti and Roma communities within broader social and institutional contexts.

Cat Jugravu is a Romanian-Romani interdisciplinary artist, curator, educator, and queer activist working across performance art, theatre, and community projects. Their practice explores the intersections of Romani, queer, and trans identities while creating spaces that reclaim narrative, memory, and embodied experience.

The event is organized by the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Center on Antigypsyism at Heidelberg University and the Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin, in collaboration with ERIAC – European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture.

ERIAC’s Film initiatives support the development, visibility, and circulation of Romani filmmakers and stories across Europe. Through partnerships, training opportunities, and advocacy, the programme works to strengthen Romani presence in the film industry and to create space for new voices and narratives.
