Advancing Romani Media Representation and Production in Europe and Beyond: A Position Paper

As part of the ERIACNET4EU initiative in 2025, financed by the European Commission, and drawing on the expertise of the members of the ERIAC Media and Information thematic section, ERIAC is proud to present the Position Paper on Advancing Romani Media Representation and Production.

This year’s position paper examines the powerful role of the media in shaping public perceptions of Roma, confronting the legacy of antigypsyism reproduced in newsrooms, on screen, and across digital platforms. It highlights the urgent need to transform harmful media narratives that reinforce stigma and normalize exclusion into truthful and ethically grounded portrayals.

In line with ERIAC’s longstanding commitment to strengthening Roma self-representation, the paper highlights the need for Roma journalists, filmmakers, and storytellers to have equal access to the spaces where public discourse is shaped. It analyses contemporary media realities and offers concrete, forward-looking policy recommendations to diversify newsroom staffing, support ethical reporting, strengthen Roma-led media platforms, and amplify Roma voices in media governance and decision-making.

Building on the lived experiences and expertise of Roma media practitioners from Europe and beyond, this document serves both as an inspiration and a roadmap for policymakers, media regulators, public broadcasters, and civil society actors committed to dismantling antigypsyism and establishing meaningful pathways for Roma participation across the media landscape.
